چکیده

The interpolation method has been one of the main tools for proving lower bounds for propositional proof systems. Loosely speaking, if one can prove that a particular proof system has the feasible interpolation property, then a generic reduction can (usually) be applied to prove lower bounds for the proof system, sometimes assuming a (usually modest) complexity-theoretic assumption. In this paper, we show that this method cannot be used to obtain lower bounds for Frege systems, or even for TC 0-Frege systems. More speciically, we show that unless factoring (of Blum integers) is feasible, neither Frege nor TC 0-Frege has the feasible interpolation property. In order to carry out our argument, we show how to carry out proofs of many elementary axioms/theorems of arithmetic in polynomial size TC 0-Frege. As a corollary, we obtain that TC 0-Frege as well as any proof system that polynomially simulates it, is not automatizable (under the assumption that factoring of Blum integers is hard). We also show under the same hardness assumption, that the k-provability problem for Frege systems is hard.

Feasible interpolation for lifted sequents

The idea of feasible interpolation for propositional proof systems is to derive lower bounds for propositional proofs using circuit lower bounds for Craig’s interpolant. However, as far as we know, proof systems such as constant-depth Frege do not admit feasible interpolation. We extend the notion of feasible interpolation so that it is admitted by a number of treelike propositional proof syste...

Nisan-Wigderson generators in proof systems with forms of interpolation

Proof complexity generators are used to define candidate hard tautologies for strong proof systems like Frege proof system or Extended Frege. They were independently introduced by Krajı́ček [3] and by Alekhnovich, Ben-Sasson, Razborov, and Wigderson [1]. Roughly speaking, the tautologies encode the fact that b / ∈ Rng(g) for an element b outside of the range of a generator g : {0, 1} 7−→ {0, 1},...

An exponential lower bound for a constraint propagation proof system based on ordered binary decision diagrams

We prove an exponential lower bound on the size of proofs in the proof system operating with ordered binary decision diagrams introduced by Atserias, Kolaitis and Vardi [2]. In fact, the lower bound applies to semantic derivations operating with sets defined by OBDDs. We do not assume any particular format of proofs or ordering of variables, the hard formulas are in CNF. We utilize (somewhat in...
